Following yesterday’s online debacle, Sony has moved quickly to assure fans that the free PlayStation Plus Edition of DriveClub is still in the works, though the company had no information to share about a release window at this time.
The trial version of Evolution Studio’s über-realistic simulator has been AWOL since the fully-fledged title debuted on PlayStation 4 back in October of last year, and recent comments made by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Jim Ryan suggested that the publisher was no longer committed to releasing the PS Plus edition at all. Thankfully, that doesn’t appear to be the case, according to a Sony spokesperson who reached out to Eurogamer.
“We are continually working on improving the server capacity to enable us to launch the PS Plus Edition as quickly as possible. Although currently we do not have an update regarding the timing for the launch.”
Though it may act as confirmation that DriveClub‘s free trial is still on the cards, PlayStation Plus subscribers have been waiting to learn more concrete details of a release window since the title was “temporarily held back” to allow the development team to double down on server work. Since then, Evolution has gradually took control of the problems, implementing features such as dynamic weather that were absent at launch as they progressed.
In fact, Sony has even went so far as to say that the entire ordeal acted as a great embarrassment for publisher and studio, considering that persistent online problems prevented people from enjoying a game that was already coming off an extensive delay of its own. When exactly the PlayStation Plus edition arrives remains to be seen, but the question has to be asked, will anyone outside of DriveClub‘s passionate fanbase take notice?
