This is a bad day for us horror-loving gamers, as one of our biggest fears has come true. That is, the apparent cancellation of Silent Hills, the fantastic-looking series reboot from directors Guillermo del Toro and Hideo Kojima.

Silent Hills‘ development had been put on hold by Hideo Kojima, who wanted to put his full attention towards Metal Gear Solid V. Then, as had been widely reported, some sort of falling out occurred between Konami and Kojima himself, resulting in the developer’s apparent decision to leave the company following that game’s much-anticipated release.

Although Konami has yet to issue a statement, Guillermo del Toro was quoted as saying, “It’s not going to happen and it breaks my greasy heart,” during yesterday’s question-and-answer session at the San Francisco International Film Festival. The Walking Dead‘s Norman Reedus – who was set to portray the game’s main character – then tweeted the following:

Of course, without having confirmation from its publisher, all we can say at this point is that this news pertaining to Silent Hills‘ cancellation is simply a rumour. However, considering the names behind these quoted words, it’ll be surprising if it ends up being untrue. That’s a shame, too, because the game had the potential to be excellent, especially given the pedigree behind it. It also spawned one of the most popular teasers out there, that being P.T., which is soon going to be removed from the PlayStation Store.

We’ll let you know when we hear more about Silent Hills, but we fear the worst and weep for it.
