The games industry’s most hotly-anticipated annual event is less than a month away and you know what that means – a deluge of leaks and rumors inbound. Like clockwork, the usual round of unverified claims have begun circulating the internet to precede E3, some plausible; others not. It’s often the case that headline-grabbing announcements hit the public’s ears long before they’re meant to, but if there’s any truth to this latest purported leak, it’s likely to send the entire internet into meltdown.
Despite Rockstar’s critically-acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 still far from being 12 months old, fans of the developer’s work have already started looking further afield for potential future releases. One of those, of course, is Grand Theft Auto 6. Though the sequel has yet to be officially announced, it’s generally accepted, given the franchise’s continued dominance, that work on GTA V‘s successor is already well underway and according to one supposed whistleblower, such a reveal could come as soon as June.
In discussing Rockstar’s future plans over on Reddit, one user claiming to be a Take-Two employee chimes in with a particularly bold claim. “Let’s just say that E3 2019 will completely blindside you with one of Rockstar’s announcements,” read ThirdeyeReddit’s initial comment, clearly hinting at the imminent announcement of something massive.
Despite being asked to verify the lofty assertion, the individual dodges any attempts to do so by claiming to be a low-level employee. “I don’t know anything too detailed as I’m lower on the food chain but we are building a landing page for Take-Two right now for something unannounced.”
Is it possible that the anonymous comments hold any truth? Absolutely, though I’m inclined to assume the complete opposite. Rumors from unverified sources have ultimately turned out to be accurate in the past, but in this case, the ‘evidence’ is much too vague. Besides that, never in E3’s nearly 30-year history has Rockstar ever attended the exhibition, preferring instead, to make big reveals on its own terms, so it’s incredibly unlikely.
Regardless, the truth will reveal itself come June 11th. In the meantime, you can find everything we currently know about Grand Theft Auto 6 over here.
