What should have been an impressive number, 4.9 million, turns out to be a disappointment. That’s how many copies of Resident Evil 6 have been sold in an announcement made by Capcom during its yearly financial report. This many units sold put Resident Evil 6 on a pedestal high enough to be the fourth best seller in the entire company’s history. However, even with its popularity, the game was deemed an utter disappointment in terms of sales.
The company projected sales of up to 7 million copies initially, but when setting aside projected numbers and focusing on actual sales, the company noted that Resident Evil 6 “sold at a brisk pace…[but]Â subsequently plateaued. As a result, it did not meet with our projection and thus was not able to play a role in leading the segment’s sales growth.”
Despite this set back in a slightly off year, Capcom still managed to make a come back in sales growth as company wide revenues were up 15 percent year-over-year, while the digital contents division of the company was up 6 percent.
Just like Resident Evil 6 was a surprising disappointment falling short from their projected sales, Dragon’s Dogma was just the opposite as it was an unanticipated hit in Japan. The redemption and growth of their sales numbers has been attributed by Capcom to this pleasant surprise, alongside the fact that Japan’s economy was on a positive rebound.
Despite the increase in revenues, profits had gone down for the year from a net income of $68 million the year before to a mere $30 million this year.
With all this said, Capcom is expecting a growth in sales and profits for the fiscal year at present. How that will be achieved, Capcom explains, will be through eagerly promoting games like Monster Hunter 4 on the 3DS and Lost Planet 3 on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
