Resident Evil 2 Has Smashed Another Eye-Watering Sales Milestone

Capcom has, and continues to be, on a hot streak of success right now. Beginning with last year's Monster Hunter: World, the Japanese studio has continued to pump out one triple-A marvel after the other, the two most recent of which you've no doubt heard of already. Both Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry 5 have been lavished with universal acclaim since their respective releases in January and March of this year, though not until now, have we known how well that critical acclaim has translated into sales.

As per the most recent update to its self-described ‘Platinum List’ – titles to have achieved 1 million sales or more and thus meeting the “generally accepted standard for a major hit” – both aforementioned newcomers make the cut, one of which is an outright winner. For the sake of fairness, it’s important to note that Resident Evil 2 has had an additional two months to accrue larger sales figures than Devil May 5, though even taking that into account, the discrepancy is clear as day.

As of writing, Leon and Claire’s reimagined tale of survival horror has racked up more than 4.2 million sales, with Dante’s long-awaited return currently sitting at 2.1 million units. Both results are positive, of course, though for some perspective, the former is already 10th on the list of all-time top sellers for Capcom despite being less than six months old. The original Resident Evil 2 sits at sixth with 4.96 million lifetime sales, so it’s not at all a stretch to imagine its sleeker and sexier remake eventually supplanting it in the rankings.

Not that it was necessary, given the huge desire fans have already expressed for a potential Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake, but the above should be all the indication Capcom needs to greenlight such a project. Assuming it hasn’t already, of course.
