It’s been no secret that the PS Vita has been showing abysmal sales in the Land of the Rising Sun, but this simple fact may be the sole reason that Japanese developers are supposedly abandoning the device.
An anonymous developer told the Nikkei Japanese paper that many companies are abandoning their Vita projects in favor of making games for the 3DS, which has been selling like proverbial hotcakes.
However, Sony‘s Senior vice president of Worldwide Studios Scott Rohde disagrees. He tells Gamasutra that “extremist quotes like that” aren’t uncommon with a new hardware launch, and these developers are not representative of the overall attitude towards the Vita
It’s true. The same comments were made back when the 3DS was doing pretty badly, and look where that’s come. I suspect no one would be able to say anything like this without the convenience of anonymity.
Personally, I love the device and hope greatly that it succeeds. Although I’d be lying if I said the poor sales in Japan, where the PSP reigned supreme for who knows how long, was a bit discouraging.
What say you, gamers? Is the Vita doomed?
