With the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in full swing in Los Angeles, the big question is which of the new gaming systems look best for selling superiority this coming holiday season, and the early answer seemed to be Microsoft’s Xbox One. But that was yesterday, and to borrow an old saying, “What a difference a day makes.”
Amazon is now reporting, through the same source, Market for Computer and Video Games, that it’s actually Sony’s Playstation 4 that’s leading in pre-sales. Amazon’s own Videogame Best Sellers chart listed the PS4 in the number one pre-order slot this morning with the PS3 title The Last of Us in second place, and then Microsoft’s Xbox One in third.
There are no hard figures from Amazon indicating just how much of a lead that PS4 may have over Xbox One, but adding fuel to the pre-sale speculation is the pre-order rankings on ShopTo.net, where the PS4 is currently in third place, while the Xbox sits at a distant fifth.
So what does this mean? Well, I don’t think the world has change too much. What is clear is that there is a lot of excitement about the new systems, and it’s unlikely we’ll know for certain which one will reign supreme until after they’ve both been released. The comments from Amazon execs yesterday remain very apt given the circumstances:
“It’s not clear yet which of the two will have the edge when they launch later this year,” says Xavier Garambois, Amazon Europe’s VP of retail. “What’s certain, though, is that fans are already excited about how the next generation of consoles will change the world of gaming and home entertainment.”
“Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are set to have a huge impact, not just in terms of cutting edge games but also as part of the way in which families enjoy home entertainment,” adds Ketu Patel, Amazon.co.uk’s head of video games. “It will be fascinating to see how the battle between the two console giants develops over the coming months – the fight for who’s going to be the must-have Christmas present is only just beginning.”
