As discovered by the video game industry super-sleuth, SuperAnnuation, Electronic Arts went on a domain registration spree earlier this month for the name Plants Vs. Zombies Adventures. In total, the publisher registered three domains using the name on March 6, 2013; PlantsVsZombiesAdventures.com, PlantsVsZombiesAdventure.com and
pvZadVentures.com.
All three Plants Vs. Zombies Adventures‘ domains currently don’t lead anywhere, and Electronic Arts has not yet announced a project with that exact title. With nothing else to back up the domains, there is no guarantee that the name will ever become an actual new game.
The last news that we received on the Plants Vs. Zombies franchise was last August when PopCap Games announced they were working on a sequel to the original game. At the time, Plants Vs. Zombies 2 was given an expected “first half of 2013″/”late spring” release window, and very few details about the sequel were announced. PopCap promised that the game would include; new plant and zombie types, new (unnamed) “features”, new (unannounced) “settings”, and new “situations” (whatever that means). Since the short press release announcement, neither Electronic Arts of PopCap has talked about Plants Vs. Zombies 2.
The obvious speculation, is that the announced Plants Vs. Zombies sequel has been renamed Plants Vs. Zombies Adventures, however, it is just as likely that Electronic Arts has more than one PvZ project currently in development.
For now, we will just have to wait for Electronic Arts to officially announce exactly what Plants Vs. Zombies Adventures is (and reveal how intrusive/crippling its DRM will be for paying customers) before we can say for sure that it is Plants Vs. Zombies 2. With the domains now registered, it should not be long before EA is ready to reveal what PopCap has been working on. We will keep an eye out for and further details and let you know as soon as anything is announced.
[Update] Looks like Plants vs. Zombies Adventures is actually a Facebook game. The good news is that it is not Plants vs. Zombies 2, the sequel will be something else and it is still coming according to the developer’s Twitter account.
