If you were to track the timeline of Destiny from the moment of release until now, you’ll soon discover that Bungie’s shared-world shooter has undergone a series of tweaks and changes as the game continually evolves based on player feedback and an adaptive end goal. Heck, you could even go so far at to argue that the title’s first year on the market was one giant beta test.
Nevertheless, ahead of the release of The Taken King expansion next month, Bungie has made the decision to cut Peter Dinklage’s voice acting in its entireity, drafting in industry veteran Nolan North – most notable for his work on Deadpool and Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series – to supplant the Game of Thrones star in the role of AI companion, Ghost.
That’s according to Game Informer, with the outlet delving into the DLC’s finer details as part of this month’s cover story. Here, Creative Director Luke Smith revealed that North will now re-record all of Dinklage’s lines, before taking on the role of Ghost in earnest when The Taken King launches.
Here’s what the voice actor had to say on the switcheroo:
They really wanted me to put my stamp on it. They let me bring what I wanted to the role. You have to give it your own spin. For that reason, I specifically said I didn’t want to hear anything that someone else had done, so that I didn’t have some preconceived notion of what it has to be. Instead, I just gave it my stamp, and let them direct me accordingly.
Though his role didn’t go down particularly well, it’s likely that the decision to axe Dinklage from the part came down to the actor’s busy schedule. This coupled with the fact that the vision for Destiny – and how Ghost fits into that shooter’s future – has most likely changed since September of last year.
Bungie is primed to debut The Taken King for Destiny players on September 15.
