Nintendo offered even more glimpses into its forthcoming Splatoon 3, giving extended gameplay and story footage, which will apparently center around some kind of mammalian creature. The game takes place in a location from the previous games, Splatsville, a city occupied by advanced sea creatures, such as squids and octopi. New and special weapons were also confirmed for the game.
Utilizing every bit of ammo in their pun arsenal, Nintendo leaned into the game’s apparent mammal theme, writing on Twitter: “Details are fuzzy but #Splatoon3’s new weapons are sure to intensify Splatsville’s multiplayer Turf Wars.
The post went on to say that in the main story mode, the “Inklings’ world is about to get a lot hairier…”
The gameplay in the trailer looked to amp up its usual ink-centric Turf War mechanics, utilizing umbrellas and paint rollers in a melee of action and excitement. And a preview of the story mode shows a visually impressive and expansive-looking world.
At one point, one of the squid-like Inkling creatures touches upon a fur-covered ball of paint, herself getting covered in fur.
The Turf War still retains its two, four player teams going head-to-head, but with added special weapons in the mix.
The original Splatoon game came out on the Nintendo Wii U in 2015, with the sequel, Splatoon 2, launching in 2017 as one of the Switch’s early titles. The Inkling characters have since become one of the most prolific, newer mascots for Nintendo, making appearances in games such as Super Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Splatoon 3 is set to release in 2022, with future updates on the way.
