It’s the end of an era. After almost 25 years of circulation, Nintendo Power will close its doors.
The monthly magazine, which originally started in 1988, focused exclusively on Nintendo consoles and was famous in its early days for including many exclusive game hints, maps, and codes, along with announcements and previews of upcoming titles.
Originally produced by Nintendo of America itself, production switched over to Future Publishing in late 2007. However, it was confirmed today that Nintendo has chosen not to renew their licensing agreement with Future, with the staff being transitioned over to other Future publications. At the moment, it is unclear how many more issues Nintendo Power will run for before it finishes up.
As someone who spent much of his childhood and teenage years as a Nintendo Power subscriber, this is a shame, but not too surprising. It’s a well-known fact that magazine circulation and profit is on the decline with the rise of the internet and its instant distribution of news and information, and most other major gaming magazines from the 80s and 90s have been gone for a while now. Still, it’s sad to see such an iconic magazine for so many cease to continue.
