When Nintendo announced Super Mario 3D World earlier this year, there were many fans who were disappointed that EAD Tokyo had not been working on another entry in the Super Mario Galaxy series. The company’s General Manager Shigeru Miyamoto has now stepped up to assure the Nintendo faithful that the much loved sub-franchise will return.
He revealed the good news during a recent Iwata Asks, saying in part:
“Just so there is no misunderstanding, I should point out that this doesn’t mean we’ll never make another Super Mario Galaxy game…”
“The same team [EAD Tokyo] can’t make both at the same time. And we can’t bring in a second party and slap the name Super Mario Galaxy on it. I suppose we could idealistically make both in Tokyo, but we want to do something new too, so there was that dilemma.”
Not to take anything away from Super Mario 3D World (which is currently my most anticipated Holiday 2013 game), but this is extremely satisfying to hear. Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel stand as two of the best platformers that I have ever played, and I would hate to think that the series died on the Wii. Especially when I think of just how incredible a third Galaxy title would look in HD.
In other Super Mario 3D World news, the interview reveals that players will have to beat the main game to unlock Rosalina as the fifth playable character. While that might not be a huge deal for some, I live in a house with two gamer daughters who put their plans to fight to the death over who could play as the lone female character (Princess Peach) on hold when Rosalina was announced. The news that we are going to have to beat the entire game to access her is not going to go over well.
On the bright side, thanks to the cover art for Super Mario 3D World‘s soundtrack (pictured in the gallery below), we now know that Rosalina has a black cat suit — which is possibly the most awesome thing ever!
