With the recent Windows 8 media store update (which allows credit cards to be used for digital purchases) many gamers were hopeful that Microsoft was leaning towards dropping the horrid Microsoft Points system. Microsoft has since issued a statement clarifying their position, and it sadly does not appear that any changes are coming.

Speaking to The Verge, a Microsoft spokesperson stated that while Xbox Live customers may use either points or credit cards to make purchases on the Windows 8 media store, “Microsoft Points continue to be the currency for purchasing content for the Xbox 360 console”.

The spokesperson did not reveal why the company is sticking with Microsoft Points for Xbox Live users, but the answer seems pretty obvious. Switching to real money at this point will highlight just how crappy their 25 cent birthday surprise really is.
