Super Smash Bros. fans who have been waiting in hopes of downloadable content for the latest entries in the series will be pleased to hear that, during today’s Nintendo Direct stream, details on two characters were dropped, along with info on some cosmetic DLC and a new web page that may hint at more characters in the future.
Both Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, which released late last year, will be receiving the iconic Pokemon Mewtwo on April 28. Though originally an unlockable fighter back in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mewtwo was absent from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but the powerful psychic will soon make a return appearance.
Mewtwo was previously announced as a bonus for the Club Nintendo program, which would provide free download codes to players who registered both the 3DS and Wii U Smash Bros. games on the site. While that deal is still in play, the general public will still get access to Mewtwo, with the 3DS version costing $3.99, the Wii U version costing $4.99, and a bundle with both versions also costing $4.99.
In a surprise but welcome announcement, another Smash Bros. veteran will return this year as well, with the character Lucas launching for both platforms some time in June. Lucas previously appeared in Brawl, but made his debut appearance in Mother 3, the Japan-exclusive sequel to the cult Super Nintendo RPG Earthbound.
The customizable Mii Fighter characters will also be getting a collection of new themed costumes available for purchase on April 15, including clothes inspired by characters from Mega Man, The Legend of Zelda, and Xenoblade Chronicles. A new software patch will also be added to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U in the near future that, besides various balance tweaks, will also include the ability to share custom Mii Fighers, replays, and stages.
An intriguing new web page called the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot was also announced and enables players to send requests for future playable characters directly to the developers at Nintendo, hopefully hinting at the possibility of more downloadable characters in the future.
We will continue to keep you updated on more news regarding the Super Smash Bros. series as it drops, so stay tuned!
