Despite numerous teases from both Blizzard and actor Terry Crews, it looks like Overwatch‘s next Hero won’t be the mysterious Doomfist after all, but someone else entirely. As per a recent post over on the Battle.net forums (via IGN), game director Jeff Kaplan simply responded with “24 is not who you think it is” when asked jokingly to detail how many new characters the development team is currently working on.
For those unaware, Doomfist is a character that’s referenced heavily through various means in Overwatch, including posters as well as one of its Payloads containing the legendary gauntlet for which the character is named. Alongside various teasers provided by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews over the last several months – including a visit to Blizzard HQ as well as a mock audition for the character – many had assumed that Doomfist would be Hero number 24 but alas, Kapan appears to have dampened those dreams.
Of course, this could all be a form of misdirection on Blizzard’s part, but that’s probably not the case. Doomfist could well be in the works for Overwatch, but he’s likely not going to be the follow-up to last year’s Sombra. The eyes and ears of the internet will now undoubtedly start to redirect to other parts of the shooter’s lore in order to try and discern some clues as to who’s next, but I imagine such things are rather few and far between.
We’ll just have to wait and see what Blizzard announces in the future, but be sure to stay tuned for more.
