Despite the launch of the PlayStation 4, it doesn’t seem that Sony is ready to stop dishing out downloadable add-ons for their 2011 PS3 title LittleBigPlanet 2. A new “Premium Level Kit” was announced for the game today via the European PlayStation blog, and while licensed expansions are hardly anything new for the series, this one looks to shake gameplay up in clever new ways.
While the majority of previous licensed expansions have sported franchises owned or acquired by Disney, such as Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, and characters from Marvel comics, this new DLC will deviate from that tradition and go straight for the Warner Bros. stable of licenses by being entirely DC Comics-themed. That means that players can expect to interact with Sackboy-ified takes on such characters as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and many more, with costumes based on these characters gradually being released as well.
The miniature campaign will apparently involve Lex Luthor kidnapping members of the Justice League to drain their powers for his own schemes, leaving Sackboy to save the day. Two major new elements will be included, namely the Hero Cape power-up, which will enable Sackboy to glide and pull off aerial stunts a la Super Mario World, and the self-explanatory wall jump. As is the case with other level packs, numerous other building materials, objects, and sounds will also be unlockable, along with seven PSN trophies and 50 in-game pins.
The first of several DC costume packs will launch with the level kit, allowing players to choose between Superman, Lex Luthor, Supergirl, Brainiac and Bizarro. Costumes for Cyborg and Cheetah will also be included with the kit. In a first for the series, a Season Pass will also be offered, giving players a discount bundle option to get the level kit, all four upcoming costume packs, and a Vita version of the pack sometime next year, for LittleBigPlanet PS Vita.
The DLC will launch across North America and Europe as part of this week’s PlayStation Store update. A promotional trailer and several screenshots can be viewed below. We will keep you updated on more news regarding the LittleBigPlanet franchise as it drops.
