During today’s Nintendo Direct stream, a surprise announcement was made in the form of a new game in the long-running Kirby series, exclusively for the 3DS. No concrete title or deep gameplay details were given, but a brief trailer has been released, along with a teaser at the end simply stating, “Coming 2014,” which gives us a vague idea of the timeframe we can expect to see the game released.
From what we can see in the trailer, gameplay looks to follow in the traditional Kirby vein, a la such past titles as the SNES classic, Kirby Super Star, and the more recent Wii title, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land.
The new title will once again take the form of a sidescrolling platformer, and Kirby will retain his talent of switching between various abilities and movesets via enemies and power-ups. It also looks like Kirby will switch between the foreground and the background at certain points, similar to Donkey Kong Country Returns (or, dare I say it, Virtual Boy Wario Land), which is likely to take advantage of the handheld’s 3D capabilities.
We will keep you updated on more news regarding the Kirby franchise as it develops. For now, check out the trailer below.
