Harmonix has remained quiet on the status of its Amplitude reboot since postponing the rhythm music game by a few months, but today the studio has debuted the very first gameplay trailer while also detailing the title’s new-fangled Multiplayer mode.
Entitled Team Play, the addition will allow players to compete with one another whether it’s in the form of a head-on-head match or the more challenging 3 vs 1 set-up. Taking to PlayStation Blog, Ryan Lesser, Art Director at Harmonix, detailed the approach to the competitive mode and how it will add something different to the upcoming reboot — or “recharge,” if the trailer above is to be believed.
Team play is something we’d never done in Amplitude before, and allowing players to team up 2v2 or even 3v1 sounded like an amazing way to even the playing field without disrupting the current design. We decided to give it a shot, and after some iteration and tweaking, we are proud to say that it’s already super fun.
Going off of Lesser’s post, it seems as though Amplitude is appealing to as wide a demographic as possible, balancing challenges for the more casual players while also including difficulty spikes for the hardcore audience that “could potentially even appeal to the competitive gaming community.” There’s certainly an established fanbase eager to see the final product when it arrives in the summer, as evidenced by the game’s overly successful Kickstarter campaign, and it’ll be interesting to see their verdict on Harmonix’s reboot upon launch.
Fans of Harmonix will be able to get their hands of Amplitude ahead of time as the studio is bringing an early build of the reboot to PAX East, which is due to take place over the weekend of March 6.
