Batgirl: A Matter of Family, the soon-to-be-released story expansion for Batman: Arkham Knight, will take place before the events of Rocksteady’s first entry in the franchise, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Widely considered to be one the best entries in the studio’s award-winning series, 2009’s Arkham Asylum still holds a special place in the hearts of fans, and Arkham Knight‘s maiden DLC will pay homage to the defining franchise-starter, even featuring a cameo from Robin.

Speaking to EW, Designer Justin Vazquez peeled back the curtain on the gameplay elements players can expect in the content pack when it releases later this month.

“We wanted to recreate the feeling of being trapped in a bizarre and unique environment playing a game of cat and mouse with the Joker. Hacking is really what separates her from the other characters. It’s a gameplay mechanic with which the player can create situations for Batgirl to really shine,” says Vasquez.

“Our intention was that Batgirl should be less powerful than Batman, but that Batgirl plus hacking could give her opportunities do things that not even Batman can pull off.”

All of this information arrives in tandem with the first screen for the Batgirl add-on, showcasing Barbara Gordon kicking ass long before paralysis resigned her to a life in a wheelchair. Boasting side-missions and a hoard of collectibles left behind by the Joker, Batman: Arkham Knight‘s first story-centric package is certainly not light on content.

Season pass holders are entitled to early access for Batgirl: A Matter of Family, where it will be available next week, July 14. It’s understood that Warner Bros. Montreal – taking the reins from principal developer Rocksteady – will debut the content pack for everyone on July 21 for $6.99. No word yet on a PC version of the Batman: Arkham Knight expansion, however, as the version continues to be affected by technical issues.
