Electronic Arts and developer Ghost Games have today peeled back the tarpaulin on their new Need for Speed title, the latest entry into the über-popular racing series that will ditch the need for a constant online connection.
Pegged to arrive in 2017 – presumably for PS4, Xbox One and PC – the official blog post from Ghost Games confirms that the Need for Speed of 2017 will be in attendance at the sophomore EA Play event in June, when we fully expect to clock eyes on the first trailer and, potentially, a firm release date.
In the meantime, the first, sun-kissed screenshot has zoomed online, with the dev team assuring longtime Need for Speed fans that customization “will play as strong a role as ever” in the upcoming title, which will surely get a subtitle of some sort to differentiate it from 2015’s franchise revival. A large, relatively open world is also on the cards, after Ghost teased a world that will “not only look beautiful,” but one that’ll also “offer you the space in which to do the things you want.”
Per Ghost Games:
First up, we wanted to say thank you. When we launched the reboot back in 2015, we were blown away by the amount of feedback you gave us. It was clear how passionate you are for Need for Speed, which is a large part of why we’re here today.
Customization, we love it, you love it, everyone loves it. What’s not to love? Rest assured that we’re committed to customization having a home within the Need for Speed series. It’s not going away and it will play as strong a role as ever as we move forward into the next game and beyond.
Need for Speed is expected to screech onto PS4, Xbox One and PC later in 2017. Ghost Games’ decision to include cops and cop chases leads us to believe that this year’s installment could be more in line with, say, Most Wanted than 2015’s online-centric title. Expect more information to debut in time for the sophomore EA Play event next month, which will take place over the weekend of June 10th.
