Independent titles have already been quite prominent on the PlayStation 4 thanks to titles such as Don’t Starve and TowerFall: Ascension. Looking to continue in this positive direction, PlayStation VP of Publisher and Developer Relations, Adam Boyes has announced a slew of new indie titles that will be coming to the console.
Information on each of the announced games can be found below.
Set in ancient Greece, Apotheon is a 2D action RPG with a unique look based around the designs seen on ancient pottery. The title is being developed by Alien Trap Games, who have previously released Capsized and Nexiuz.
Coming to the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4, Axiom Verge is a “Metroidvania” style action title that is heavily influenced by classics such as Bionic Commando and Master Blaster. Featuring the unique ability to glitch through surfaces, the title is being developed by Tom Happ, who has previously worked at Petroglyph Games, all by his lonesome.
A procedurally-generated RPG platformer, Chasm places gamers into the shoes of Daltyn, a young soldier sent to investigate a mysterious disappearance in the mountain town of Karthas. As with most mysteries, though, things are quickly explained via the power of the supernatural and it’s up to our inexperienced hero to save the day. The title is being developed by the team at Discord Games, who have previously released efforts such as Take Arms and 48 Chambers.
Looking to make the jump from iOS development to console development, Drifter is the first non-mobile title to come from developer Celsius Game Studios. Featuring a massive galaxy to explore, the game allows for every player to make their own way through the world. Careers such as captain, miner and bounty hunter are just a few of the options that will be available.
Released earlier this year for the PC, Escape Goat 2 is a puzzle platformer that is as odd as it sounds. Developed by the team at MagicalTimeBean, this adventure focuses on our titular goat as he travels through the Stronghold of Toragos on a mission to rescue his friends.
A card-based, real-time strategy title, Ironclad Tactics transports players to the American Civil War, which is an era of time not particularly explored in games. However, throw away those stuffy old textbooks because this ain’t your great grandfather’s war. This time around, robots join in on the fun. Featuring co-operative action and a story told through an in-game graphic novel, the strategy title comes courtesy of Zachtronics, developer of Infiniminer, SpaceChem and several other PC titles.
Coming this summer, Jamestown Plus is a port of the well received PC title Jamestown, which was developed by Final Form Games. A classic “bullet-hell” shooter (think Ikaruga or Radiant Silvergun), this take on the genre features four player co-op, as well as new levels and ships not previously found in the PC version.
Released to critical acclaim earlier this year, Nidhogg is a side-scrolling fencing game with an incredibly interesting look. Besides claiming that the title was meant to be played with a controller, the team at Messhof will also incorporate features such as Twitch streaming and the ability to change the DualShock 4’s light bar to match your on-screen character.
Coming in with perhaps the best announcement trailer of the day, Skulls Of The Shogun: Bone-a-Fide Edition is a port of 2013’s turn-based strategy game of the same name for the Xbox 360. Featuring all of the stages and features of the original release, this upgraded edition also adds one new additional chapter, as well as a new unit and an assortment of new multiplayer maps.
Previously released for the Xbox 360, Windows PC, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, Spelunky is an excellent adventure game from the talented team at Mossmouth. The PlayStation 4 version of the title won’t be too different from the previously released versions, but it will feature 1080p graphics and additional features for the Daily Challenge.
We’ve apparently saved the weirdest for last, as Starwhal: Just the Tip is a fighting game that features four narwhals competing to stab each other in the heart. Watch as these majestic creatures spastically prance about in neon drenched environments. This competitive action-fighter comes from the team at Breakfall, who previously released the not-nearly as odd Marvin’s Mittens back in 2013.
More information on each game can be found over on Sony’s Official PlayStation Blog. Take a look at let us know which one excites you most.
