After a brief pitstop that witnessed the prestigious series take a one-year break, Electronic Arts is gearing up to reveal this year’s installment in the Need for Speed franchise, which will be revealed via YouTube on Thursday, May 21.
In tandem with the announcement, the publisher released a teaser image which, when enhanced, appears to indicate that Thursday will herald Need for Speed Underground 3, the beloved sub-series that hasn’t been glimpsed on the streets since NFS Underground 2 in 2004. Now more than a decade later, fans are speculating that now is the right time for the IP to make its triumphant return.
Last we heard about 2015’s entry into the franchise – in development at Rivals dev Ghost Games – EA claimed that the racer was already shaping up to be “spectacular.” A good omen, then, for a studio that took a one-year hiatus in order to inject the long-running series with a welcome dose of innovation. According to reports, Need for Speed 2015 is on course to be one of EA’s tentpole fall titles, releasing anywhere between October and December of this year, though neither Ghost Games or EA itself has nailed down a concrete window. That could all change in two days’ time.
