Though the writing has been on the wall for some time, Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson has now officially acknowledged that Titanfall 2‘s sales figures were lower than expected.
Wilson touched on Respawn’s sequel during a recent earnings call, and though the executive stopped short of disclosing exact numbers – mind you, EA is reportedly backing away from posting specific sales figures for any of its titles – Andrew Wilson confirmed that Titanfall 2 missed the mark sales-wise. EA still maintains a “great relationship” with Respawn though, according to the CEO.
Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, many have since attributed the sequel’s poor performance to a late October release window – remember, Titanfall 2 was sandwiched between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare – however, Andrew Wilson believes the first-person shooter will enjoy strong sales momentum over the coming months thanks to positive reviews and general word of mouth.
Per Seeking Alpha (via GameSpot):
“So, the way we think about Titanfall, is that we have what is one of the best games of this year, and certainly one of the best games in this generation of consoles, in what is this year’s largest category,” Wilson said (via SeekingAlpha). “And we’ve got a development team who have unbelievable pedigree and a commitment to continue to support the community, and we expect to continue to grow that community through the coming fiscal year.”
Last we reported on Titanfall 2, Respawn’s CEO Vince Zampella conceded that there’s currently no guarantee of a third entry in the blockbuster series. Elsewhere on EA’s slate, the publisher’s earnings call brought word of a holiday 2017 window for Star Wars Battlefront 2, which will deploy for PS4, Xbox One and PC touting a full-fledged story mode.
