Just when I thought I had time to catch my breath after playing through the awesome Resident Evil 2 remake, Capcom delivers the second in a solid one-two punch in the early part of 2019. And in case you hadn’t figured it out, I’m talking about the long-awaited and highly anticipated Devil May Cry 5.
Given how this franchise has been on the shelf for some time, it’s quite understandable that the publisher feels the need to bring gamers up to speed. After all, Devil May Cry 4 came out in 2008, so certain details may have been forgotten by those who haven’t replayed any past offerings in the time since. Of course, there was the 2012 reboot, but that’s obviously been scrubbed from canon.
That said, a refresher of sorts can be found in the form of a new trailer embedded at the top of this article. Basically, it manages to recap series lore in a matter of minutes, referencing the finer points of Devil May Cry 1, 3 and 4. Naturally, some stuff previewing the next entry is thrown in for good measure, too.
Strangely enough, Devil May Cry 2 isn’t mentioned at all. Often regarded as the black sheep, it’s somewhat understandable that Capcom not factor it into Dante and Nero’s new adventure. Still, its omission is causing some to wonder if it was just consciously ignored, or if it’s no longer part of canon.
Hopefully we get an answer before long because the series’ timeline is about as bizarre as it comes. Those familiar are aware of how it goes as follows: 3, 1, 4, 2. For the most part, it was assumed that the fifth installment takes place after the panned 2003 sequel, but I guess knowing that it’s after the fourth game is good enough for mapping this out in our heads.
Devil May Cry 5 arrives in stores this Friday, March 8th.
