Dead Rising 4‘s campaign will be single-player only, with co-op play restricted to a separate four-player mode instead, Capcom Vancouver has confirmed.
In a Twitch stream held yesterday on the Expert_Zone Community channel, Dead Rising 4 producer David McAnerin confirmed during a question and answer segment that the survival horror’s story mode will be strictly single-player only, with Frank West being the only playable character.
A transcript (via Destructoid) of McAnerin’s response can be seen below.
Yeah, we have an online four player mode. So, in the story mode, it’s a single player story mode, you’re going to play just as Frank…The four player co-op is our multiplayer mode. It’s a little bit inspired by the original Infinity mode for the old school fans.
Taking into account that both Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 3‘s story modes supported co-op play, Capcom’s decision to occlude the feature from this year’s iteration is rather baffling, to say the least.
It’s certainly not the same, but those that prefer to play with others aren’t being left out entirely – a four-player co-op mode will be included as a separate offering. Again set in the Willamette Mall, you’re paired together with three other survivors and must survive the undead onslaught in order to reach a safe house.
“The structure is, the four of you start the game together, you start in a safe house; you get a load up, get some weapons, get yourself ready to go,” explains McAnerin, adding that once suitably armed, you’ll be faced with “killing, mayhem, madness lots of interesting missions that take advantage of our systems…You have to get to the safe house to survive the end of the day.”
Whether the revelation will have any impact on Dead Rising 4‘s appeal remains to be seen, but if you’re not fazed by the story being single-player only, you’ll want to put a ring around December 6 on your calendar.
