In accordance with previous reports, Nordic Games has confirmed the existence of Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition in all its tongue-twisting glory, all the while hinting at the possibility of a third installment in the cult RPG series.

The remaster is in development at Gunfire Games, which is reportedly staff “almost entirely” of the creative team from Vigil Games, who worked on the original Darksiders. Thanks to a resurgent interest in the series, Nordic now has a “large-scale project” in the works that is based on the DS universe. Whether that is a subtle confirmation of a potential third entry in the franchise remains to be seen, but you can check out the official statement for yourself below.

We took over the franchise roughly 2 years ago and thought about the next chapter for Darksiders ever since then. Naturally (and extremely excitedly!), there will be a large-scale project based on Darksiders, but for now it is very important for us to take care of the existing games and make those available to a broader audience. Bringing Darksiders 2 to current gen was a logical step for us and the team at Gunfire Games know their trade inside-out, so we easily and quickly had lots of ideas that we wanted to realise for this specific edition.

Beyond that, Nordic will gauge the possibility of remastering the 2010 Darksiders should the Deathinitive Edition prove to be a success when it releases across PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year. Much digital ink has been spilled about the feasibility of re-releases, but this is an example of the tactic being used effectively to garner interest in a dormant series that suffered badly from THQ’s collapse.

That interest will be put to the sword when Darksiders 2: Deathinitivie Edition launches for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this winter.
