Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is now exactly a single month away from its September 2nd North American release date on the Vita, and publisher NIS America has taken the opportunity to release some new screenshots of the game, along with information on some of the new gameplay mechanics fans can expect from the sequel’s trademark trial segments.
As with the original game, the story will again focus on a group of high-schoolers tricked into being forced to discreetly kill each other and attempt to get the blame pinned on someone else to escape their dangerous predicament. The cast this time around will be almost entirely different from the original, with newcomer Hajime Hinata inheriting the role of protagonist from Makoto Naegi. As murders inevitably occur, Hajime and his comrades will be forced to partake in intense trials, where arguments, clues, and ideas will clash against each other in an attempt to identify each crime’s culprit.
Though it’s likely that many of the basic mechanics for trials, such as countering specific statements Ace Attorney-style with specific items of evidence, will make a return, there will be several new mini-games included to decipher and discover clues during them. These include the trippy-looking Logic Dive, where players steer a skateboard through a neon-heavy area and attempt to steer themselves into correct answers, and Rebuttal Showdown, where other characters can interrupt Hajime’s statements and trigger a one-on-one confrontation, and the returning Hangman’s Gambit, with players having to select the correct letters needed to spell a key word or phrase. Judging by the below screenshots, it also seems likely that the comic book panel-styled minigame where players must put pictures in a specific order to detail a hypothesis will return.
