Capcom has finally announced that they will return to the Darkstalkers franchise, with the release of Darkstalkers Resurrection on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network early next year.
Resurrection is not exactly the next entry into the classic fighting series, but is instead a package containing re-developed versions of Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge and Darkstalkers 3. Iron Galaxy, the studio behind Marvel Vs. Capcom: Origins, is handling development on the game and is planning to make this much more than a simple re-release of the original titles.
Both games in Darkstalkers Resurrection will include; GGPO-enabled online game play, HD graphical filtering with several viewing options, replay sharing, Spectator Mode, in-game Achievements/Trophies , Challenge/Tutorial Mode, and unlockable concept artwork/videos.
Yoshinori Ono has often hinted to fans that he would like to return to Darkstalkers, and Capcom seems to be positioning Resurrection as the “first step” towards achieving that goal. Speaking to Joystiq at New York Comic-Con, Capcom producer Derek Neal stated “Ono has a dream of revitalizing the Darkstalkers franchise, and this is the first step to get there. [Ono] wants Darkstalkers 4.”
Darkstalkers Resurrection is currently targeted for an “early 2013” release on XBLA and PSN, for 1200 Microsoft Bucks and $14.99 respectively. Check out the game’s announcement trailer below.
