Following several days of rumoured speculation, Infinity Ward has officially confirmed the resolution disparity between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts. News comes via Twitter, where the company’s executive producer Mark Rubin stated that the Xbox One will natively output the game in 720p —before upscaling it to 1080p— whereas the PlayStation 4 will run the first person shooter at 1080p from the get-go.
Here’s what Rubin had to say about the game’s resolution:
“Hey, been on the road last couple weeks so haven’t had a chance to update, but wanted to confirm that for Xbox One we’re 1080p upscaled from 720p. And, we’re native 1080p on PS4. We optimized each console to hit 60 FPS and the game looks great on both. Still on the road, but glad to see the great reception to Extinction. Can’t wait for next week’s launch.”
Much has been said about the performance difference between Microsoft and Sony’s new consoles, but this confirmation is the first tangible evidence of said disparity. Although both 720p and 1080p are considered high definition resolutions, the news is somewhat surprising considering the stature of Infinity Ward’s franchise. Granted, unless you’re booting up Call of Duty: Ghosts on a display bigger than 32in, it’s unlikely that your television will be able to project the game in 1080p anyway—with most smaller TVs locked at 720p instead. It’s also worth noting that this won’t affect the game’s ability to render in 60 frames per second.
Technical minutia aside, the developer recently released an all-new live action trailer for the game, which is set for launch across multiple platforms tomorrow, November 5th. The apocalyptic sizzle reel primarily takes place in a decimated Las Vegas and showcases some of the game’s new features —including Riley, the trained canine companion. What’s more, the promo also features Transformers’ star Megan Fox as a no-nonsense sniper.
