Though its existence was somewhat spoiled thanks to an untimely Amazon listing, Sony has confirmed that it will be releasing a PS4 bundle that includes From Software’s upcoming exclusive, Bloodborne.
News comes alongside a new gameplay snippet for the Victorian-themed RPG, which delves into the new-fangled Chalice Dungeons feature. Revealed back in December, this foreboding area is located deep beneath the city of Yharnham — Bloodborne‘s gothic, Lovecraftian setting — and will feature procedurally-generated environments.
In a post via PlayStation Blog, From delved into the minutia of the unique concept, and how Chalice Dungeons will have players coming back to the game over and over again in a way that the Souls series could only dream.
A quick recap for the uninitiated. As you play through Bloodborne you’ll obtain various items that you can use to perform rituals in the game’s central hub area. These rituals serve to open up a Chalice Dungeon.
These dungeons are ruinous areas underneath the town of Yharnham that differ depending on the combination of items you use in your ritual. No two players will ‘spawn’ identical dungeons, though you can invite other players to fight with you and help clear out the instance that you’ve created.
Much like that of a roguelike, Bloodborne‘s novel feature will ensure that budding demon hunters can continue to plough through the subterranean levels without the experience feeling repetitive. It’s an interesting premise, no doubt, and if Chalice Dungeons work as expected upon launch, then the studio will have opened up a platform for players to communicate and strategize with each other to complete the game’s more challenging areas.
Bloodborne will test the mettle of PlayStation 4 owners the world over when it launches on March 25. In the meantime, you can let us know your thoughts on the RPG’s intriguing Chalice Dungeons via the comments section below.
