Well, that was unexpected. Despite mapping out preliminary plans to bring mod support to Fallout 4 on PlayStation 4 – along with October’s Skyrim: Special Edition – Bethesda announced today that the much-anticipated feature will remain exclusive to Xbox One and PC.
Word comes by way of the publisher’s official blog, where Bethesda revealed that “after months of discussion” with Sony, it turns out the platform-holder essentially pumped the brakes on PS4 mod support at the 11th hour. That means that, at least for the foreseeable future, PS4 owners will be left yearning for the popular feature, which has produced some truly memorable, meme-worthy modifications to the Commonwealth.
Per Bethesda:
After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.
Like you, we are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available.
Currently available on Xbox One, questions were raised when Bethesda delayed the PS4 version multiple times, and it turns out that, at least for now, those plans have now been shelved entirely: “We will provide an update if and when this situation changes,” the blog concludes.
What do you make of this 180? Indeed, are you disappointed that Bethesda has scrapped plans for PS4 mod support across Fallout 4 and the upcoming Skyrim Special Edition? Do let us know.
