Though many had assumed it to be MIA, Bethesda has provided an update on the long-gestating console version of The Elder Scrolls Online.

Last we heard of The Elder Scrolls Online‘s console version brought news that ZeniMax had delayed the game by around six months. But since then, the port has been completely MIA, leading many to assume the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One editions had received the axe. However, the developer has assured fans that that is simply not the case and that the ports are — slowly — inching closer to release.

In a statement on the MMO’s official blog, the company touched upon the status of ESO on consoles and confirmed that it likely won’t be released until the latter stages of 2015.

We have been (and will continue to be) steadily working on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of ESO. They are playable and fun right now, but there’s still some work to do before we can set an official launch date. It’s also important to note that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of ESO are not just ports of the PC/Mac game.

ZeniMax had initially pegged The Elder Scrolls Online to arrive on PS4 and Xbox One in June, but the studio opted to shelve the port and prioritize fixing the PC build, which was lumbered with bugs and glitches that are to be expected with the launch of a new MMO. As such, the console versions were subsequently delayed indefinitely, though today’s new is the first indication in a long time that those ports are still very much alive and kicking.

We have completely replaced the PC user interface with a console-specific UI designed from the ground-up with a controller and a living room play experience in mind. We’ve also added voice chat and full integration with XBL and PSN. Expect to see lots of news about our console versions in early 2015.

The Elder Scrolls Online originally launched for PC and Mac back on April 4th. But will the demand for the MMO wane by the time the console versions arrive? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
