Bethesda’s console ports of The Elder Scrolls Online have endured several delays by this stage, but today brings news of light at the end of the tunnel for the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the MMO, after the company confirmed that the two will release on June 9.
Not only that, Bethesda has confirmed that, almost one year after its debut, players will no longer be required to pay a subscription fee to gain access to the online title, as the pay gate will be phased out on PC and Mac beginning on March 17. This will then set the stage foe the arrival of the console ports three months later, which will kickstart a soft rebranding of the MMO which is now being described as TESO — Tamriel Unlimited.
Per Bethesda:
Beginning June 9th, you can join your friends on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to play The Elder Scrolls Online – Tamriel Unlimited… with no game subscription fees!
Tamriel Unlimited is arriving on PC/Mac, too – beginning on Tuesday, March 17th. To celebrate the announcement, we’ve released The Confrontation, the final chapter in our thrilling series of cinematic trailers. Watch the stunning conclusion and get ready for Tamriel Unlimited!
It’s worth keeping in mind that console owners will still be required to own a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold account in order to play The Elder Scrolls Online. Still, news of Bethesda dropping the additional fee is certainly welcome news, one that has no doubt been influenced by the continued success of Bungie’s shared-world shooter, Destiny.
More than a year after its debut on PC, The Elder Scrolls Online will transition to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on June 9, where players will be able to hop into the mystical realm of Tamriel without worrying about a subscription. However, do you feel Bethesda’s decision to drop the monthly fee is too little, too late?
