Coming out of E3, one tends to associate their favorite announcement with a particular game – after hours of deliberation, of course – but aside from Microsoft’s backwards compatibility megaton, Sony had its own hardware tidbit that piqued the interest of PlayStation 4 owners the world over.
Media Player, a feature that has been missed since the console first debuted in 2013, is now finally available on the console, allowing users to plug in and play files from USB devices. According to PS Blog, the new-fangled addition will support a variety of file formats, including MKV, MP4, MP3 and much more. For a full list, be sure to consult the dedicated post.
In the meantime, here’s the official word from Sony on the PS4’s Media Player:
“The Media Player works with both your home server and when plugging a USB stick with media into one of the available ports on the PS4,” say Sony. “Your home server will appear as a media option in the player automatically and finding your media is simple and quick.”
Announced during Sony’s E3 press conference on Monday evening, the platform holder ensured that console owners will now be able to utilize the playback feature just as they did with PlayStation 3, streaming audio and video from a DLNA-compatible device, or storing the content locally for ease of access.
PlayStation 4 owners will find that the Media Player is available to download now through a small patch. Tell us, have you acquired the console’s newest feature? If so, let us know your experiences thus far in the comments below.
