Of all the major battle royales currently vying for control of the market, Apex Legends is arguably the most competitive. Prior to the addition of a bonafide ranked mode in Season 2: Battle Charge, fans had been lobbying for such an outlet as a means of truly testing themselves against the best of the best. A persistent stream of cheaters attempting to ruin the fun aside, the hardcore-focused playlist has only served to bolster Apex‘s fortunes and now, Respawn intends to take those aspirations even further.
Announced today via a joint press release from the developer and parent company EA, Apex design director Chad Grenier provided the first details for the squad shooter’s first Preseason Invitational tournament.
Competition is in the DNA of Apex Legends and this competitive event will showcase the game at its highest level. This Preseason Invitational advances our vision towards a robust competitive experience with the community at the center. We continue to explore all the entertaining ways both players and spectators can experience Apex Legends and look forward to bringing this event to life.
In regards to tournament format and eliminations, the press release stipulates that all participating teams will begin their campaign to victory in a winners bracket. From there, each team’s performance in a predetermined number of matches will dictate whether they remain there or move to the losers bracket. Should teams continue to post poor performances in the latter, elimination is likely.
Of course, it’s no good holding a tournament of this magnitude if there’s no prize up for grabs and fortunately, there’s more than enough reasons to participate. 500,000 of them, to be precise. We expect further details to be announced closer to the competition’s start date but for now, we know that it’ll take place sometime in September in Krakow, Poland.
