In an announcement that could only be described as “not shocking,” Marvel revealed during their New York Comic Con panel that The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a sequel to last year’s adaptation of the movie of the same name, will swing onto consoles in 2014.
Developed by Beenox, the web slinger’s latest game will launch on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and PC.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will follow in the steps of its predecessor and will once again feature the titular hero swinging around an open-world Manhattan and saving the day. Although the game shares the same name as next year’s film, it will not follow the same events. Instead, the title will feature a unique story.
New to the sequel will be the addition of a “Hero or Menace” system. Throughout the campaign, Spider-Man will be asked to do good deeds to help out the general public. Completing these deeds will allow gamers to unlock additional features and upgrades. However, if you fail to complete these deeds or let criminals get away, there will be some unfortunate consequences.
In addition to playing as Spider-Man, gamers will also have to spend a portion of their time playing as Peter Parker, where you’ll have to investigate various villains hiding out in the city. No word yet on whether or not you will also have to attend classes, but we’re hoping that you don’t.
The original The Amazing Spider-Man: The Video Game was decent enough, but definitely a title that could have used some improvement. Hopefully Beenox takes the lessons that they learned from that game, as well as their previous Spider-Man games, and crafts an excellent adaptation instead of just an alright one. On a separate note, does anyone else find it weird that this sequel isn’t being released for the PlayStation Vita, even though the original game is getting ported to the system?
