Wolfenstein
Wolfenstein is a genre defining seminal FPS game. A title that spawned a succession of superb PC games that would shape the way modern shooters are designed and played today. Without Wolfenstein there would be no Call of Duty, Battlefield or Overwatch. Wolfenstein pioneered sound 3D level design and shooting mechanics which became the archetype by which all subsequent FPS games are based, and for that it is certainly one of the most important games ever made.
[zergpaid]At its core, however, Wolfenstein is about a Jewish soldier un-remorsefully killing and executing Nazi soldiers. The whole game is a sort of symbolic revenge for the atrocities committed during World War II, using a collective hate of Nazism as an excuse for excessive violence and gore. And while killing Nazi’s in itself was hardly likely to spark any great protest, the numerous appearance of the swastika, an image banned in many European countries, and the glorification of Nazi-ism throughout the game certainly struck a chord. Indeed, Wolfenstein was banned in Sweden and Germany upon its release.
