Earlier today, Sony took to the PlayStation Blog to formally announce that 2012’s video game tie-in, The Amazing Spider-Man, will release for PlayStation Vita on November 19th. Though last year’s version was handled by Beenox – the studio behind Spider-Man: Edge of Time and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions – the Vita port will be developed by Mercenary Technology and will be priced at $39.99.
Bill Chinn, the studio’s executive producer, detailed the way in which the development team plans to take advantage of the handheld’s native features.
“The PS Vita release of The Amazing Spider-Man is a virtual playground in your pocket, maintaining that same spirit of the console edition while adding new energy through the Vita’s special features. Peter Parker’s smartphone plays an integral part in how you interact with the city around you, and the Vita’s unique form reinforces these elements.”
The Amazing Spider-Man will also utilise the Vita’s touch screens, thereby allowing players to set various waypoints in a matter of seconds. Moreover, the game features gyroscope functionality that transforms the portable device into a camera; with players being able to aim and direct Peter Parker’s snaps of the Big Apple.
Much like the 2012 original, the storyline takes places shortly after the events of Sony’s blockbuster film and tells an adjacent tale set in Manhattan. Not only that, the port will feature the novel Web Rush ability that gives player the opportunity to slow down gameplay and make split-second decisions as they swing from skyscraper to skyscraper. Ultimately, The Amazing Spider-Man will retain the core mechanics from last year’s title while implementing some novel bells and whistles in its transition to the PlayStation Vita.
At this time, the game is currently slated to release in North America on November 19th, with a UK launch pegged for a “later date.”
