15 Video Games That Failed To Live Up To The Hype

The hype train rolled into town this year with No Man's Sky behind the wheel. Lara’s fortunes might have revived since, but back in 2003, Angel of Darkness was well and truly the final nail in her coffin. For a game that marketed Lara’s surgically enhanced assets at every turn, Angel of Darkness failed to evolve a formula we had been revisiting since 1996. Poor controls and awful AI only compounded matter.

Following a critical lambasting, Core Design – founders of the heroine – were shown the door. It was time for a change, and Crystal Dynamics were brought in, well and truly rebooting the franchise with 2013’s Tomb Raider.

Fable

No list is complete without a Peter Molyneux game (or two). The British developer is famous for making grand claims about his games and then backtracking on them once they’re released. Thousands of fans have been left in the lurch as a result, and Fable is one title that did Molyneux no favours.

What was supposed to be the greatest RPG ever turned out to be…. meh. Where was the grand epic we were promised? The open world? The fully-realized characters? The unyielding scope? The diverse weapons, attire and interactions?

Fable was good, but good wasn’t enough.
