Batman: Chaos In Gotham (2001)
Released for the Game Boy Color, Batman: Chaos in Gotham was based on the short-lived The New Batman Adventures TV series. As an exclusive for the handheld console, you could choose between Batman and Batgirl as you battled Arkham Asylum’s escapees, such as the Joker, Harley Quinn, Bane, and Two-Face. In other words, it’s the plot to every single Dark Knight game before and after it.
While not as in-depth or comprehensive as its 16-bit spiritual cousin, The Adventures of Batman & Robin, this title is still one of the best portable Batman games around. It’s simple, easy to play, tonally consistent with the series, and a whole lot of fun for all ages.
And really, what more could you want from a Caped Crusader game?
Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety (1995)
It’s surprising that Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety didn’t receive too much hype, especially since it’s the sequel to Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage. When Maximum Carnage was released, the gaming community went nuts over it. Not only could you switch between Pete and Eddie, but you could also call upon other Marvel heroes to help you out in this side-scrolling, beat ’em up affair. Oh, and lest we forget: the epic 8-bit Green Jellÿ soundtrack.
To be fair, the two games were almost identical in every single way, so if you played one, you played both. Still, most games are derivatives of others in some way or another, so who wouldn’t want another shot at playing as both Spidey and Venom? With lots of symbiotes to smash and a Ghost Rider special appearance, it sounds like a mighty fine deal to me.
