As one of the most prestigious IPs among Sony’s enviable roster, few franchises boast the sales figures and install base of Polyphony Digital’s reputable Gran Turismo series. In fact, such is its grandeur that it’s absence has been felt among PlayStation’s 4 software library, with Evolution Studios’ non-starter DriveClub only exacerbating that void.

Thankfully, news of the all-but-confirmed Gran Turismo 7 appears to be imminent. Yes, this is a franchise with a notoriously slow turnaround, matched only by Konami’s Metal Gear Solid series, but the fact that series godfather Kazunori Yamauchi recently teased that we’ll see the upcoming sequel in action sooner rather than later leads us to believe that GT7 will toe the line of Sony’s proverbial E3 starting grid.

It’s an announcement that could swing the momentum back in the publisher’s favor following the delay to fellow heavy-hitter Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Make no mistake, Sony needs to call upon its dormant first-party studios if it is to undercut Microsoft’s resurgent drive, and Polyphony is one of — if not the — biggest names if the racing genre.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines.
