The entire world is undoubtedly still reeling from fear, anxiety, and sheer panic after the news that the Titan, a passenger submersible, lost contact with the surface and disappeared while paying an underwater visit to the wreckage of the Titanic. Among the five people stuck on the Titan, one of them is British billionaire Hamish Harding — whose college is currently under fire after the university, in a display of poor taste, made an incredibly awful choice of theme for a recent event.
As per Varsity, Pembroke College held its annual May Ball last night — which apparently featured an under-the-sea theme, enraging lots of folks and certainly not painting the university in a good light. In the report, the university played numerous tasteless songs at the prom-like event — including Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” which is literally played in James Cameron’s Titanic just before the ship collides with an iceberg and eventually sinks.
In the aftermath, the May Ball Committee spoke out about the theme, insisting that it was chosen “many months” before the Titan disappeared. On that same note, the May Ball Committee followed up with: “If we could change it now, we would.” The committee also extended comparison and expressed thoughts and prayers for Harding and his family, but it’s clear that damage has already been done — with students claiming that the entire event was “insensitive.”
As of right now, the search is still on to locate the five people trapped inside the Titan, which went missing on Sunday. According to Coast Guard officials, the missing submersible is tragically running out of its oxygen supply, but the search is certainly still happening.
