With the ongoing “reboot” trend that’s happening in Hollywood, Back To The Future is sure to be a franchise that could get eventually get looked at. While it is obvious that a new cast will be part of this hypothetical film idea, there is one casting choice that fans claimed could be perfect to play Marty McFly.
Recently, the original Marty McFly actor, Michael J. Fox commented about a possible reboot in a recent interview with Variety. The actor mused that, while a reboot of the popular 80s sci-fi film is highly possible, he likely wouldn’t be entirely supportive of the idea since he doubts that there’s a “better way to tell the story.” Regardless, Fox’s commentary was a signal for fans to get speculating about who could take over from the old guard and play the film’s iconic characters.
This led to some Twitter users picking Tom Holland as the perfect man for the role. They believe that he has the same charisma as Marty McFly and that there are similarities between him and Fox.
One Twitter user extended this fan casting to include someone who could play Doc Brown. Let’s see, who has a history of playing someone smart and eccentric, but also has good chemistry with Tom Holland but doesn’t have any long-term superhero contracts? Perhaps, Robert Downey Jr? Not only is he perfect for the role, but fans have also championed the former Marvel actor through the use of deep fakes years before the Fox interview took place.
In fact, a YouTube user named EZRyderX47 created a video where they replaced the original faces with Holland and Downey Jr in a scene from the first Back to the Future film.
Interestingly, Holland has commented on the possibility of appearing in a Back to the Future reboot in the past, during a 2020 interview on BBC Radio One. The actor revealed that he had conversations about the role but claimed that the film is already perfect so there is no point in him doing it, which lines up with Fox’s recent comments. However, he said that he’d be interested in doing that one scene with Downey Jr since the deep fake version did “such a good job.”
“I’d be lying if I said there hadn’t been conversations in the past about doing some sort of remake, but that film is the most perfect film- or one of the most perfect films, one that could never be made better. That said, if [Robert Downey Jr.] and I could just shoot that one scene that they remade for fun – he could pay for it cause he’s got loads of money – I would do it for my fee and we could remake that scene. I think we owe it to deep fake because they did such a good job. … I think I’m gonna speak to Robert and see if we can try to recreate something for deep fake.”
Back to the Future was first released in 1985 and received a high critic score of 97 percent and an audience score of 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The film received high accolades from both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. Due to the film’s success, it was announced back in July 2022 that a Back to the Future Musical would be making its way to Broadway.
As of right now, far there aren’t been any plans or official announcements about a Back to the Future remake.
