Samara Weaving has become something of an “it girl” for bombastic action horror flicks following some tremendous roles over the las few years, and her next one promises more bloodshed than ever before.
Weaving continues to cement herself as a strong candidate for this generation’s greatest scream queen, following roles in Ash vs. Evil Dead, The Babysitter, and the frankly underrated horror comedy Ready or Not. Next up for Weaving is Azrael, in which she plays the titular character in another provocative-sounding horror film.
From E.L. Katz, the director of Cheap Thrills, and writer Simon Barrett who has plenty of experience with the V/H/S series, we’ve got another new and original horror movie. Azrael follows a woman-led cult in which nobody speaks, as Weaving’s character is hunted down to be sacrificed for occult reasons.
If you’re noticing a trend of Weaving being nearly sacrificed in a lot of movies, you’re not alone.
The first still was released via Deadline, who gave the first details surrounding this new Weaving vehicle. The cult elements, especially for a cult led by women, gives it a very certain The Wicker Man vibe. We can only hope it’s better than the Nicolas Cage Wicker Man reboot from 2006, though.
There is no concrete release date given for the release, with it feeling like a potential film festival debut type of a film. Alongside Weaving in the cast is several lesser known actresses in Rea Lest, Vic Carmen Sonne, and Katariina Unt, which speaks to the film being shot in Estonia on an estimated $12 million budget.
