If you’re going to take true crime podcast recommendations, why not take the from one of the greatest authors ever, alive or dead: Stephen King. The celebrated horror author name recently recommended a true crime podcast he calls “hypnotic.”
The podcast is called Bear Brook and there are currently two seasons. Here’s the logline: “Jason Carroll is serving life in prison for a murder he says he didn’t commit. The only evidence against him? His own taped confession. More than 30 years later, is it possible to get to the truth – and who gets to tell it?”
Someone claiming the podcast is “the best” they ever heard is high praise indeed, but coming from the man who wrote The Shining and The Stand, that’s got to feel incredible. The president of the public radio station that aired it and the senior reporter on the project both thanked the celebrated author for the shout out.
Here’s reporter Jason Moon:
The podcast has landed on a number of “best” lists as well. The first season of the pod came out in 2018 and quickly became a hit, and the second season started in February. Here’s what NHPR had to say about the latest season:
“Bear Brook Season 2: A True Crime Story centers on a new, even more complex case from 1989 when New Hampshire police charged three men in the murder of a pregnant woman named Sharon Johnson. But only 19-year-old Jason Carroll was convicted. Police built the case against him around his own taped confession extracted by a veteran detective.”
Bear Brook is available on a variety of podcast platforms.
