Though DC fans just got their first look at My Adventures with Superman a short time ago, it hasn’t stopped the hype train from building up speed. The upcoming animated feature is just around the corner now, and fans are dying to know precisely when it will drop in 2023. Superman isn’t the only hero fans are ready to embrace this year. Despite a slew of controversies surrounding her in recent years, Amber Heard has plenty of stans ready to see her return as Aquaman love interest, Mera. The controversial hot take may have some shaking their heads, but despite her litany of bad press, Heard has managed to stick to the franchise like barnacles on a ship’s hull. HBO Max is rebranding itself to simply, Max, and the subscription service has chosen none other than Black Adam to entice users to join the site. Fans are finding the choice riotously hilarious, as well as fairly cringey as far as promotional moves go, with Black Adam one of the worst reviewed DC films of the year.
A first look at the upcoming ‘My Adventures with Superman’
My Adventures with Superman, the latest in the animated adventures of the iconic superhero, has plenty of fans excited for the future. The series won’t be coming to Max anytime soon, however. While HBO may be behind the latest animated foray, the series will be premiering on Adult Swim, with a later run on Toonami long before it ever arrives on the streaming giant. The series follows 20-something Clark Kent after he makes his way to the big city. Instead of following the hero as the established Man of Steel, it plans to take a closer look at how the small-town Kansas boy established himself in Metropolis, and his budding romantic relationship with the intrepid Lois Lane. Jimmy Olsen completes the trio of reporters, but the series promises to include longtime characters Lana Lang, Kara Zor-El, and comic book villain, Toyman. While we don’t have an actual release date quite yet, we do know that the animated adventure will be making its way to the small screen sometime this year.
Somehow Amber Heard still has fans in the DCEU
Despite the recent bad press surrounding her, and her impressive lack of talent, Amber Heard has still managed to hold the interest of Aquaman fans. WB seems to have a wait-and-see approach to its problematic actors — see: The Flash’s Ezra Miller, a convicted felon who (allegedly) groomed, drugged and abused an Indigenous girl from the age of 12 — and Heard is no exception. The actor has been embroiled in controversy since she accused then-husband Johnny Depp of domestic abuse while filing for divorce in 2016. The drawn out public trial displayed the worst of both actors, and though audio evidence proved that Heard herself was a perpetrator of physical violence (although a previous lawsuit in the U.K. substantiated Depp’s abuse), Warner Bros never dropped her from her role as Mera.
It doesn’t seem as though the negative publicity is enough to keep some Heard stans from backing the actor, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom set to hit theaters this year, plenty of her fans are excited to see her return. Many DCEU fans are less sure about the film, Aquaman has hit several delays since it was announced and plenty of fans are starting to worry that the movie will flounder just like most recent DCEU entries.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to hit theaters December 20, 2023.
Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam may not have been the best promotional choice
HBO Max subscribers are still wrapping their head around the company’s choice to rebrand to simply “Max” yesterday. While the name change seemed somewhat abrupt, it’s not the only thing that has fans wondering what the company is up to. With their switch to a simplified moniker, Max also chose the box office flop, Black Adam to be its top promoted piece. Considering the fact that the Dwayne Johnson helmed film has no sequels, tie-ins, or really any life going forward with the DCU, fans are gob smacked by the decision. There is no doubt that Max has far more popular offerings held within its dense library, so the decision only makes sense if it’s Johnson’s handsome mug the service is hoping to capitalize on.
