Despite the chaos and complete restructuring of DC and Warner Bros., Constantine 2 might still be safe to enter production according to a new report.
Following James Gunn’s hiring as the head of DC’s film strategy, everything which was previously in the works seemed to have been either axed or put to the side. Among the most surprising developments of 2022 was the long-awaited confirmation of a Constantine sequel some eighteen years after the original released.
The scything of Wonder Woman 3, Henry Cavill’s Superman, and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam failures made it seem as though the Constantine announcement was premature: but there is still life left in the beast. Warner Bros. has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly the sequel has not been scrapped, meaning fans still can hold out hope for Reeves to return.
Gunn’s first DC slate features many interesting choices, and a definite focus on the lesser-knowns of the expansive DC comic canon. Constantine wasn’t mentioned at all in his first chapter, but this small update should give renewed hope for the cult comic book character to resurface.
Constantine is a curious oddity of the 2000s. Featuring Reeves after he had really risen to prominence for The Matrix, it grossed a solid amount but was held back by mixed critical reception. The cult following only increased in the near two decades since, with sequel confirmation last year quite the surprise.
Francis Lawrence is expected to return as director for the much-anticipated sequel, following many years in between working on The Hunger Games films.
