Some of the best news we got from new DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently was that we were getting a brand new Superman movie. While it was bittersweet because of James Cahill not coming back as the Man of Steel, it was still good to hear. The movie’s called Superman Legacy, and Gunn wrote the script. Now we’re learning that he’s also directing, and that the release date has special significance to the Gunn family.

Gunn took to Twitter to share something a bit more personal than he usually does. Turns out the July 11 release date is the same date as Gunn’s father’s birthday.

He elaborated a bit more in the comments.

“I lost my Dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film and I wouldn’t be making this movie now without him. It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved.”

Gunn explained that eventually he did find a way to make a Superman story that felt personal and also exciting.

“Then a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”

Honestly, this sounds great. We all know the type of work Gunn can do when he’s inspired, and tackling Superman from this angle has all kinds of fun possibilities. Gunn sure does know how to hype a project.

Superman Legacy is scheduled for a June 11, 2025 release. A date that will no doubt be an emotional one for Gunn and his brother Matt.
