Universal has announced the latest Mark Wahlberg action film, Contraband, for Blu-Ray in April. The film is directed by Baltasar Kormákur and it co-stars Kate Beckinsale, J.K. Simmons, Giovanni Ribisi and Ben Foster.
Contraband hit theaters in mid-January, bringing in $24 million opening weekend. That’s impressive for an R-rated January action flick that looked beyond generic. I guess Wahlberg can still carry a film, unless people just wanted to see something other than Oscar nominated films from last year.
I thought the film was just a tad too by-the-books for my tastes. Everything is predictable and stale, leaving no room for creativity. The best thing was Ben Foster, but even he gets to be too much at a certain point in the film.
Our very own Benjo Colautti had this to say about the film in his review.
Contraband works to a degree as an action film that is functional enough to enjoy. However, the pace often drags and the ludicrous moments that take over control midway through destroy any tension built up in the gritty earlier act. None of the cast can do anything to elevate the material beyond what it is: a January movie from top to bottom.
The Blu-Ray/DVD/UltraViolet digital copy combo pack will be presented in 1080p with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. The following special features have been confirmed.
- Audio Commentary with director/producer Baltasar Kormákur and producer Evan Hayes
- Two behind-the-scenes featurettes (Under The Radar – The Making of Contraband, Reality Factor – The Stunts and Action of Contraband)
- Deleted Scenes
Contraband will hit shelves on April 24th, 2012.
