Universal Home Video has announced director Steven Soderbergh’s “last” theatrically-released film Side Effects for Blu-Ray in May. The film stars Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Channing Tatum.
Director Steven Soderbergh will be truly missed if the rumors regarding Side Effects being his last theatrically-released film are true. At the same time I’m glad that he’s going out with this particular film, because it’s a very well done drama, with lots of unpredictable twists and turns and an amazing performance by Jude Law, who was all but wasted when he last teamed up with Soderbergh for Contagion.
With Side Effects the plot is much more concentrated, focusing on a core group of characters instead of a star-studded cast, like his last two films Contagion and Haywire.
Soderbergh is a master of first-class drama and unfolding storytelling and Side Effects is just another respective notch on his ever-expanding belt. It feels good knowing that he’s “going out” with such a strong film to remember him by, but it also sucks majorly knowing that one of the greatest directors of all-time is packing it in, when he clearly has so many good years left of filmmaking.
Our very own Jonathan Lack had this to say about the film in his official review:
An intense, zany, manipulative, gorgeously executed mess of a movie, Side Effects is entirely designed to play one big, cruel prank on its audience, a punch Soderbergh delivers with vigorously precise gusto.
Side Effects will be coming to Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack with the following confirmed bonus features, as well as a 1080p video transfer and a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track:
- Aliza Website Experience
- Behind the Scenes of Side Effects
- Ablixa Commercial
- Intenin Commerical
Side Effects will be available to own on May 21st, 2013.
